Newsletter branding

Indiegogo wanted a brand new look and feel for their 3 different eCommerce newsletters. Here’s my process for what the new look would be from ideation to final.

I wanted the newsletter to feel updated and easier for users to read through. I also wanted to introduce a softer look to create a friendlier approach. I used Figma to create the new design.

Below I’ll have my final 3 versions but if you’d like to see my process keep scrolling!

Here’s the brand new newsletter in action!

If you’d like to see my process for all 3 versions, stick around! :)

VERSION 1 process

Version 1 is a newsletter that consisted of campaigns that were in InDemand. Essentially, it was a customer-facing eCommerce newsletter, sent out multiple days a week. Here’s the process from what it looked like before to now.

Below are images in their respective order:

1st - old newsletter

2nd - wireframe for new newsletter

3rd - new newsletter

The old version was composed of squares and rectangular shapes. I wanted to remove the sharpness and introduce rounded edges. I also thought the excess of buttons created visual clutter and tried to find clean and neutral solutions that still created buyer urgency. Here are some of the changes I made and the thinking behind them:

  • GOGOPICKS: Instead of another button, I created a simple star icon and kept the color teal/green so it didn’t confuse old audience members while still helping the campaign stand out.

  • CHECK IT OUT: Though I kept this CTA in the main header, I didn’t think it needed to be there for every campaign and thought a simple cart icon could do. This lets the user know it’s clickable and ready to purchase.

  • FOLLOW: I also kept this in the main header but distilled it to a heart icon for the remainder of the newsletter in order to simplify. The heart echoes the CTA in the header while allowing users to focus on the title and tagline without crowding the smaller space.

VERSION 2 process

Version 2 is the regular Indiegogo newsletter that is sent out three days a week. It consists of a longer version featuring more campaigns as well as room for larger paid slots (Gogopicks).

Below are images in their respective order:

1st - old newsletter

2nd - wireframe for new newsletter

3rd - new newsletter

Version 2 expanded on the changes introduced in Version 1:

  • The campaign images in the original newsletter didn’t have any visual consistency in their alignment - some were centered, others were left or right-leaning and still others stretched across the page. I simplified the alignment with changes that allowed the newsletter to feel dynamic while being a little easier on the eyes.

VERSION 3 process

Version 3 is the coming and going Indiegogo newsletter that is sent out every Wednesday. It’s a shorter newsletter that showcases exciting campaigns that have just arrived or are ending soon.

Below are images in their respective order:

1st - old newsletter

2nd - wireframe for new newsletter

3rd - new newsletter

Version 3 incorporates the changes made in Versions 1 and 2 with a few new ideas:

  • I wanted the Coming and Going newsletter to feel different than the other eCommerce newsletters since it is a special once-a-week edition. I adjusted the header design to reflect the slight difference in newsletter purposes while still feeling like it fit in with the rest of the weekly newsletters.

  • The original Coming and Going newsletter felt a little crowded at the top. I created a more eye-catching header that also gave the title more space to breathe.
